The history of Computer
1. Abacus - 3,000 BC, it was invented in Babylonia.
- Device that has a frame with beads string on wires or rods.
Arithmetic calculations are performed by manipulating the
beads.
- Developed in Chine 12th Century
2. Napier's Bone - Developed by John Napier(Scottish Mathematician)
- It is composed of a set eleven rods with numbers marked on
them in such a way that by simply placing the rods side by
side, products and quotient of large numbers can be obtained.
3. Oughtred's Slide Rule - Developed by William Oughtred(English
Mathematician)
- Consists of 2 movable rules placed side by side.
4. Pascal's Calculator - Develop by Blaise Pascal (French Mathematician and
Experimental Physicist) Who was one of the First Modern
Scientist to developed and build calculator
- It was operated by dialing a series of wheels.
- It was capable of adding and subtracting.
5. Leibniz's Calculator - Invented by Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz(German
Philosophy)
- It utilized the same techniques for addition and subtraction
as Pascal's Device but could also perform multiplication and
division, as well as extracting square roots.
6. Babbage's Difference and Analytical Engine - Invented by Charles
Babbage(English Mathematician)
- Who is known as the Father of Modern Computer.
* Difference Engine - Designed to automate a standard procedure
for calculating polynomials.
* Analytical Engine - Uses two type of Cards.
- Operation Card - Uses to indicate a specific function to be
performed.
- Variable Card - Used to specify the actual data used
command or print.
7. Hollerith Punched Card/ tabulating Machine - Developed by Herman
Hollerith.
- Used by US Berequ of Census in 1890.
- It uses 3 by 5 inches punched card to record data stored.
"ABA Augusta Love Lace" also know as Lady ADA Byron"
-Is the First Computer Programmer.
